OILS & PREGNANCY written by Vicki Opfer:
Having had the opportunity to study with [Drs.] Penoel, LaPraz, and the doctors at the Aromatic Medicine Congress in Grasse, France, I’ve asked each one of them about contraindications with pregnancy…
Each one of these experts assured me that essential oils are safe for pregnant women, and that they would not hesitate to use any or all oils during pregnancy.
I tell you this so that if a woman realizes that she’s pregnant, she won’t worry about the oils she used before she found out…
I believe that we may not know everything yet, and that we should always err on the side of caution. So my suggestion is that women not overdo the use of oils during pregnancy. Do I think they could be harmful?
No, I actually don’t…
What I do believe is that if there was any complication of the pregnancy or childbirth, wouldn’t they always wonder whether it could have been the oils that caused the problem?
It may be prudent to consider the lists that have been put together, and adhere to them, just to err on the side of caution.
Gary Young went back to the original study about using clary sage during pregnancy.
They took pregnant rats, cut them open, and dropped clary sage oil, which had been stored in a refrigerator, into the uterus. The uterus contracted. From that, they determined that it’s not safe to use clary sage during pregnancy because it causes the uterus to ontract.
The study was published. People quoted it.
They were then quoted, and so it goes, until everyone assumed that clary sage is not safe during pregnancy.
It’s logical to assume that if cold water had been dropped into those rats’s uteruses, they would have contracted… The study may have been faulty, and now it’s gospel…
Additionally, for all you young women out there, Hanna Kroeger taught me 23 years ago to sip peach leaf tea for morning sickness, and it works so well, it’s like a switch has been turned, and it turns off morning sickness.
Peach leaf tea is not as easy to find today, as it was then, so for those of you who have organic peach trees, please collect leaves, wash them, allow them to dry, and keep them on hand for the young women, coming behind us, who will have morning sickness…
Also, it’s hard to stay hydrated during pregnancy…please make sure that those who are pregnant are drinking plenty of pure water.
